New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg has met with the widow of Robert Atkins, the diet guru he recently described as fat.

bq. City officials said last week they didn’t know whether Bloomberg apologized to Veronica Atkins at the Monday meeting but said the two discussed a possible gift to the city from the Robert T. Atkins Foundation to study obesity among city schoolchildren. In January, Bloomberg was recorded during a conversation in which he said Robert Atkins was “fat.” Atkins died in April 2003 after falling on a sidewalk and hitting his head. After Bloomberg’s remarks, Veronica Atkins demanded an apology. The mayor did not apologize publicly.
