Dieting giants struggling against low-carb craze

The Washington Post has published a thorough article on how low-carb diets are affecting traditional weight-loss programs such as Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig and Slim-Fast. For example, sales of Slim-Fast's traditional meal-replacement shakes and powders slipped 27 percent last year. Jenny Craig sales have been flat or declining for much of the past five years. And Weight Watchers membership fell 3.1 percent in the fourth quarter of 2003, while product sales were down 8 percent.
