China getting fat thanks to West

An article in today’s USA Today notes that China is quickly bulking up, thanks to an increasing Western influence.

bq. There is perhaps no better way to appreciate how much has changed in China than by examining the people themselves. Consider what today’s Chinese eat and drink. In a country where man-made famine killed 30 million people as recently as the early 1960s, more than one-fifth of adults are now dangerously overweight or obese. The proportion is expected to approach 40% in two decades.

Alcohol consumtion is up 4x over levels in 1978. Other factors mentioned include a more seditary lifestyle and increased fat consumption.

We noted a growing obesity problem with Chinese youth last month (an estimated 10% of Chinese youth are obese).
