George Weston Ltd. plans to close an Entenmann’s baked goods factory in suburban Northlake, Illinois, as it tries to cut costs and improve declining profits accredited to the popularity of low-carb dieting.

bq. The Canadian company said its U.S. business has increased prices and taken steps to cut costs, including closing its Northlake baking facility in reaction to the pressure that low-carb dieting has put on its financial results.

Officials of the Northlake bakery said they would keep the facility open as a distribution center and outlet center, but production was halted on Friday, and 333 of the 420 workers laid off. The facility produced bagels, some danish pastries and other goods.
