In response to today's news linking high-carb diets with breast cancer, Atkins Nutritionals has provided CarbWire with the following statement:
"We at Atkins Nutritionals have long known there are serious health risks beyond just that of obesity that go along with a very high-carbohydrate diet, particularly one high in refined carbohydrates. The new study is actually just the latest addition to a growing body of research showing disturbing associations between high-carbohydrate diets and cancer risk. At least six other studies have suggested links to colorectal cancer, breast cancer and endometrial cancer. Numerous studies have linked high levels of blood sugar and insulin that can result from a high-carb diet to higher risks for the metabolic syndrome, diabetes and heart disease."
"In the face of this mounting evidence, it is imperative that dietary recommendations be adjusted to emphasize the consumption of whole foods, namely high quality protein, all natural fats (not manufactured trans fats), adequate fiber and 'good' carbs, meaning vegetables, low-glycemic fruits like berries, seeds and nuts as well the judicious use of whole grains. We are happy to see the increasing acceptance of such an approach by the medical and nutritional establishment."
CarbWire is an online magazine of everything low-carb. Whether you're already on a diet, or are just doing research, we provide the most up-to-date info on the web.
