Tracey Rollison helps you slow down and learn to cook healthy low-carb menus

We all live busy lives and are constantly hustling and bustling to do this, that, and everything else. It’s been that way since I was a kid in the 1980s, but it wasn’t that many decades ago when families actually sat down together to eat meals in the dining room together. What happened to those “good old days?” Well, when you desire to live healthy like those of us on the low-carb lifestyle, it is a necessity to add homemade, fresh, local, low-carb meals with real, whole foods that taste good and are good for you. Today’s podcast interview guest is now providing an amazing low-carb menu service that will help you do just that!

In Episode 340 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” we hear from Tracey Rollison who created a low-carb menu planning service called “Good Life Menus.” She realizes most people are utterly clueless about how to cook good meals on your low-carb life. We’re such a fast-food-focused society that the art of made from scratch healthy low-carb food is archaic. Listen to Tracey talk about how her allergy to mold as a child impacted her diet growing up, how she found the low-carb diet, the effect of her third pregnancy on her metabolism, why she started her low-carb menu planning business, what’s wrong with other so-called low-carb menu services, how she got so frustrated looking for the service she now provides and why she decided to take the plunge and do it herself, why she decided to stick with foods people could recognize and use all of, whether this menus plan is easy enough for novice cooks to do, her aversion to soy and artificial sweeteners in her menus, how she keeps her menu preparation and cooking time to less than 20 minutes, the color-coded grocery shopping list, why her menus don’t contain grains, high-glycemic foods, or fake foods, how they can sign up for her menus service, and what the feedback from kids are to these menus.

Dr. Uffe Ravnskov: Stop Worrying About Saturated Fat And Cholesterol Harming You

Filed under: Health — jimmy @ 11:48 pm

Dr. Uffe Ravnskov argues the case for not fearing fat and cholesterol in our diet

Did you know that consuming dietary fat and cholesterol can actually be GOOD for you? If you say things like this to most medical or nutritional professionals, then they’ll look at you funny and label you a quack. But does the science support limiting saturated fat and lowering cholesterol in the body or increasing it? Today’s podcast interview guest presents compelling evidence to the latter to combat the conventional wisdom that unfortunately still dominates mainstream thought in health circles today.

In Episode 339 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” we are so thrilled to welcome the great Dr. Uffe Ravnskov from Sweden who has a fantastic new book called Fat And Cholesterol Are Good For You. One of the world’s leading cholesterol skeptics (and member of the international group THINCS), Dr. Ravnskov has been battling the hardline establishment for decades and is fully convinced based on his examination of the medical literature that the heart health/saturated fat/cholesterol theory is bunk. You’ll be hard pressed to think otherwise after listening to this living legend share his life’s work with us today.

Listen to Dr. Ravnskov talk about why he became so passionate about the subject of promoting the health benefits of fat and cholesterol, why a Finnish TV show burned his book on air, why saturated fat and high cholesterol are not harmful especially for women and the elderly, how eating dietary cholesterol has very little impact on blood cholesterol, why having low cholesterol levels lead to cancer, the benefits of having high LDL cholesterol, how to convince people to stop taking statin drugs to artificially lower cholesterol, why statin drug and margarine companies have gotten him banned from appearing on television, the explosion of low-carb, high-fat (LCHF) in his homeland of Sweden, the significant absence of evidence supporting the role of saturated fat in any health calamity, how to lower the number of small, dense, and dangerous LDL particles, how to silence your opponents regarding the healthful benefits of saturated fat and cholesterol, the blacklisting he has experienced with many of the medical journals, what the harmful effects of consuming excessive carbohydrate in the diet is, how Type 1 diabetics used to be treated with extremely low-carb diets prior to the discovery of insulin, what his favorite high-fat foods are, why he’s not a fanatic about getting grass-fed and pastured foods only, whether polyunsaturated fats should be limited or not, and what people can do to avoid a heart attack. It was such a privilege and honor for me to speak directly with one of the real experts on the front lines and cutting-edge of the health debate.

Click here to soak this one in for all it’s worth and listen to it several times if you still believe fat and cholesterol will harm you.

New Atkins Diet Puts Focus Back On ‘Foundation Vegetables’ And Healthful Saturated Fats

Filed under: Atkins Diet, Health, In The News, Publications — jimmy @ 1:49 am

Dr. Eric Westman gives the full scoop on why a new Atkins is needed

What’s the first thing people think of when you say the “Atkins diet?” Things like all-you-can-eat high-protein meat, eggs, cheese, very little veggies or fruit, no bread or sweets and stuff like that probably immediately come to mind. Others think it was just some dangerously unhealthy passing fad that faded out in 2004 and is only still followed by people who are putting their long-term health at risk. But today’s podcast interview guest is one of the leading low-carb researchers who has teamed up with two other low-carb research colleagues to co-author a brand new version of the Atkins diet for 2010 to put the focus back on the science supporting the low-carb way of eating!

In Episode 338 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” we welcome back to the podcast Duke University low-carb researcher and practitioner Dr. Eric Westman who is here to share all about the March 2, 2010 release of New Atkins for a New You: The Ultimate Diet for Shedding Weight Fast and Feeling Great Forever. You might be wondering “here we go again” with yet another attempt at revamping the Atkins diet like the December 2008 release of The All-New Atkins Advantage: The 12-Week Low-Carb Program to Lose Weight, Achieve Peak Fitness and Health, and Maximize Your Willpower to Reach Life Goals by Colette Heimowitz (who I previously interviewed here) and Dr. Stuart Trager which disappointed many within in the low-carb community with their focus on “lean protein” and a very heavy emphasis on lots of fruits and vegetables getting away from the basic principles that the late, great Dr. Robert C. Atkins based his original diet on. But as you’ll hear from Dr. Westman, they wanted to bring back the high-fat, moderate-protein, low-carb nutritional approach that Dr. Atkins promoted as his life’s work. The new book brings living the Atkins lifestyle into modern society with a few important strategies that have been missing in previous versions of the Atkins diet.

Listen to Dr. Westman share about who is behind this new Atkins diet book, what’s different about this book from the previous Atkins diet books, why some people need to keep carbs very low forever, how much pressure there was to water down the message to make it more marketable, why Dr. Atkins was never interested in doing studies on his low-carb diet, why we need a brand new version of Atkins in 2010, ways to minimize the negative effects of the “Induction flu,” some of the changes in terminology in this new book including “foundation vegetables,” “Atkins Edge,” and “metabolic bully,” what the healthy role of saturated fat is in Atkins low-carb, his thoughts on the so-called “Eco-Atkins” and how to properly make a vegetarian-styled Atkins diet, whether Atkins Nutritionals is returning to the original principles that Dr. Atkins built the company on, how often the Atkins bars and products are pushed in the sample menus, why the main focus of the diet is on real foods, who the target audience of the book is, the role of calories and portion sizes on this new Atkins, a practical list of ways to break stalls, why consuming dietary fat is so important to fat-burning, the definition of “net carbs” and the role of sugar alcohols, why consuming vegetables are so important on the Atkins diet, the purpose of eating often especially for people who are just beginning a weight loss regimen, why this book should not be read literally but rather as a generalized guide, the impact that both prescription and over-the-counter drugs can have on weight loss, the purpose of the success stories listed in the book, and why he is not accepting royalties from the sale of this book and where the money will actually be going.

Setting The Record Straight On Bad Science About High-Fat And Low-Carb Diets

Filed under: Health, In The News — jimmy @ 3:01 am

Two new studies may be leaving you in disbelief about high-fat, low-carb

When I was thinking about what subjects I wanted to hit on while writing my latest book 21 Life Lessons From Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb, one no-brainer had to be all of the ridiculous headlines that have come out about healthy high-fat and low-carb diets under the guise of scientific research. You’ve seen what I’m talking about whenever a new study releases showing supposed damning evidence against this way of eating and that’s what our culture grabs hold of as “proof” that low-carb and high-fat diets are unhealthy. In fact, we just saw it happen just this week with two new studies that I’d like to highlight and obliterate for you.

Click here to read about a study claiming low-carb diets raise LDL and why they think this is a bad thing as well as another study showing a high-fat diet increases stroke risk in women although they conveniently forget to say what else is in those “fatty” foods. These studies have been touted all over the news this week and it’s time to set the record straight!

Discover Why Lierre Keith Describes Vegetarianism And Veganism As A ‘Myth’

Lierre Keith went from a diehard vegan to enthusiastic omnivore

Walk up to your average Joe on the street and ask him what the “healthy” way to eat is and he’ll likely tell you that it includes a diet full of lots of fruits and vegetables. You might even hear people respond that vegetarianism or being a meatless vegan is the optimal way to eat for your health, improve the environment, and show your care and concern for animals. We’ve heard these arguments made by the fundamental and radical end of the vegetarian movement, but are they valid? Today’s podcast interview guest knows firsthand how falling for the myth of the vegetarian/vegan lifestyle can quite literally ruin your life.

In Episode 334 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” we hear from a former 20-year vegan named Lierre Keith who has one of the most compelling stories of nutritional transformation you will ever hear in your life! After many years of devoting her entire life to being a bleeding heart vegan, she began a long journey of education and transformation in her own mind that the way she was living was the exact opposite of what she needed to be doing. Her passion today is in helping give hope and inspiration to those who are still caught up in the vegetarian lie and she outlines a compelling case in her book The Vegetarian Myth: Food, Justice, and Sustainability. Her mission is to offer a non-threatening challenge to everything vegetarians and vegans thought they believed about their chosen way of eating.

Listen to Lierre Keith tell us about why she became a vegan to begin with, how veganism ruined her health and nearly killed her, the negative health impact of consuming soy, what it was that convinced her she was wrong about meat-eating, the positive concept of death that is involved in the making of all food including fruits and vegetables, what meat she ate to end her veganism, how the Weston A. Price Foundation taught her the proper kinds of foods to consume, the impact of Sally Fallon’s Nourishing Traditions on her philosophical change of mind, her response to Dr. T. Colin Campbell’s The China Study book, why she decided to write her own book, the shortcomings of factory farming, how grains are destructive to the planet, why hunter-gatherers were the perfect picture of health, why those behind the Eco-Atkins movement are so misinformed about soy foods, and how the vegetarian/vegan community has responded to the message of her book.

Click here for one of the most fascinating conversations I’ve ever had in the more than three-year history of my podcast show! You owe it to yourself and every vegetarian and vegan you know to have them listen to this interview! It will be well worth the one-hour investment to hear it from start to finish.

Low-carb exercise expert Josef Brandenburg correcting bad diet/fitness beliefs

There is a lot of misinformation about there about virtually every aspect of your diet and health, but thankfully there are people actively seeking to dispel the myths that pervade our cultural beliefs. It’s an uphill battle that smart journalists like Gary Taubes and Michael Pollan are trying to do for diet, but there are also some fantastic professionals in the fitness industry who get it about exercise, too. One such man is today’s podcast interview guest and he’s even a fan of the healthy low-carb lifestyle!

In Episode 335 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” we welcome back to the podcast Washington, DC-based fitness expert Josef Brandenburg who has authored a brand new book entitled The Body You Want From A to Z – Real World Strategies To Get The Body You Want in the Time You Actually Have. Josef is dedicated to spreading the RIGHT information about the most annoying fitness myths out there which he shares with us in today’s show. Hear him talk about why doing crunches for building your abdominal muscles is stupid, the best way to strengthen your core, why low-carbers can build plenty of muscle, why there is no long-term danger for muscle growth on a low-carb diet, why working out hard doesn’t mean you need more carbs, why hours of cardio exercise is futile for weight loss, why bicep curls won’t give you bigger biceps, why being a certified personal trainer means nothing (see the photo of Josef’s dog who got certified as a trainer below), what’s wrong with the idea that fat people just don’t move around enough, why more exercise may not be better, why working specific muscle groups is dumb, and why he decided to write his new book.

Dr. Bill Gavin’s ‘No White At Night’ Diet Is A Simple 3-Rule Weight Loss Plan

Filed under: Health — jimmy @ 4:49 am

Dr. Bill Gavin came up with a simple three-rule diet plan that worked for him

Just in case you didn’t know, weight loss can be very difficult to do. DUH! You know it, I know it, and it is incredibly frustrating for so many who have been on and off so many of these plans over the years they’ve become professional dieters. But why does it have to be so difficult? Today’s podcast interview guest broke it all down to three main points to bring simplicity into a concept that many people overcomplicate.

In Episode 336 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” we hear from Dr. Bill Gavin, author of a book called No White At Night that calls for a three-pronged way to eat:

1. Eat 3 meals a day.
2. Eat protein at every meal.
3. Eat no white foods at night.

Dr. Gavin created this way of eating to combat his own personal weight gain as well as to help his mother dealing with diabetes. Hear him discuss how The Zone diet by Dr. Barry Sears influenced him, why not no white at all, why Oprah Winfrey and others habitually struggle with their weight, how to determine the tipping point for people to make changes, why low-fat foods are so insidious, his support for lean protein over fatty cuts of meat, his reaction to my positive experience on a high-fat, low-carb diet, why he thinks genetics come into play with lipid results, why he believes a low-to-moderate carb diet is ideal in the long-term for the majority of people, how he describes his way of eating to others, and the trends of those who maintain their weight.

Click here to listen to this conversation which isn’t exactly what you and I believe on every point, but you have to appreciate how he breaks down the diet into three basic concepts.
