From weight loss to nutritional education on just about every metabolic possibility you could imagine, the publishing world has a book coming out about it. New Atkins Diet Puts Focus Back On ‘Foundation Vegetables’ And Healthful Saturated Fats

Filed under: Atkins Diet, Health, In The News, Publications — jimmy @ 1:49 am

Dr. Eric Westman gives the full scoop on why a new Atkins is needed

What’s the first thing people think of when you say the “Atkins diet?” Things like all-you-can-eat high-protein meat, eggs, cheese, very little veggies or fruit, no bread or sweets and stuff like that probably immediately come to mind. Others think it was just some dangerously unhealthy passing fad that faded out in 2004 and is only still followed by people who are putting their long-term health at risk. But today’s podcast interview guest is one of the leading low-carb researchers who has teamed up with two other low-carb research colleagues to co-author a brand new version of the Atkins diet for 2010 to put the focus back on the science supporting the low-carb way of eating!

In Episode 338 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” we welcome back to the podcast Duke University low-carb researcher and practitioner Dr. Eric Westman who is here to share all about the March 2, 2010 release of New Atkins for a New You: The Ultimate Diet for Shedding Weight Fast and Feeling Great Forever. You might be wondering “here we go again” with yet another attempt at revamping the Atkins diet like the December 2008 release of The All-New Atkins Advantage: The 12-Week Low-Carb Program to Lose Weight, Achieve Peak Fitness and Health, and Maximize Your Willpower to Reach Life Goals by Colette Heimowitz (who I previously interviewed here) and Dr. Stuart Trager which disappointed many within in the low-carb community with their focus on “lean protein” and a very heavy emphasis on lots of fruits and vegetables getting away from the basic principles that the late, great Dr. Robert C. Atkins based his original diet on. But as you’ll hear from Dr. Westman, they wanted to bring back the high-fat, moderate-protein, low-carb nutritional approach that Dr. Atkins promoted as his life’s work. The new book brings living the Atkins lifestyle into modern society with a few important strategies that have been missing in previous versions of the Atkins diet.

Listen to Dr. Westman share about who is behind this new Atkins diet book, what’s different about this book from the previous Atkins diet books, why some people need to keep carbs very low forever, how much pressure there was to water down the message to make it more marketable, why Dr. Atkins was never interested in doing studies on his low-carb diet, why we need a brand new version of Atkins in 2010, ways to minimize the negative effects of the “Induction flu,” some of the changes in terminology in this new book including “foundation vegetables,” “Atkins Edge,” and “metabolic bully,” what the healthy role of saturated fat is in Atkins low-carb, his thoughts on the so-called “Eco-Atkins” and how to properly make a vegetarian-styled Atkins diet, whether Atkins Nutritionals is returning to the original principles that Dr. Atkins built the company on, how often the Atkins bars and products are pushed in the sample menus, why the main focus of the diet is on real foods, who the target audience of the book is, the role of calories and portion sizes on this new Atkins, a practical list of ways to break stalls, why consuming dietary fat is so important to fat-burning, the definition of “net carbs” and the role of sugar alcohols, why consuming vegetables are so important on the Atkins diet, the purpose of eating often especially for people who are just beginning a weight loss regimen, why this book should not be read literally but rather as a generalized guide, the impact that both prescription and over-the-counter drugs can have on weight loss, the purpose of the success stories listed in the book, and why he is not accepting royalties from the sale of this book and where the money will actually be going.

There is a lot of low-carb “stuff” out there for you to get your hands on and I’m always fascinated to see which ones rise to the top of the heap. Especially with such a wide selection of products available from online retail sites like Amazon.com, wouldn’t it be interesting to see what the bestsellers are among your fellow readers? Well, now you can because today I’m going to share the Top 25 Amazon affiliate sales through my web site in 2009. Interestingly, Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution did NOT make the list, but I suppose that book has been floating around out there long enough by now.

Book Review: ‘The 6-Week Cure For The Middle-Aged Middle’ By Drs. Mike And Mary Dan Eades

Filed under: Publications, Review — jimmy @ 4:05 pm

Drs. Mike and Mary Dan Eades have armed frustrated low-carbers with a plan!

For those of us who have been livin’ la vida low-carb for years, the temptation is always there to allow a few more carbs and/or calories slip into our diet than we did when we originally followed our chosen controlled-carbohydrate plan. It’s perfectly within human nature for this to happen for those who desire variety in their menu choices while still attempting to eating in a healthy high-fat, adequate protein, and low-carb way. Low-carb diet experts and bestselling authors Drs. Mike and Mary Dan Eades know about this all too well.

After shooting a pilot episode of their hit low-carb television cooking program called “Low-Carb Cookworx,” the producer of the show told the honest truth to Dr. Mike and Dr. Mary Dan about their major problem — you’re “too fat” for a health-related television show! Shocked by this revelation from an outsider of their condition at the time, this caused the well-known low-carb authors of the bestselling Protein Power books to reevaluate their own personal dietary habits, devise a plan for ridding their bodies of a little excess weight that had come on them, and make it happen as quickly as possible. Thus was born the concepts for what would become The 6-Week Cure For The Middle-Aged Middle: The Simple Plan to Flatten Your Belly Fast!.

While the Eades are abundantly aware of the long-term, lifestyle change approach to losing weight the low-carb way, they admit that sometimes there are compelling reasons to take the weight off a little faster as in the case of their TV show, an upcoming wedding, or some other significant life event that is coming. That’s exactly what this book offers in just a 6-week period. And the plan is PERFECT for both the people who have been low-carbing for years or for the newbie low-carber alike. This is a great way to kickstart your low-carb lifestyle into high gear.

So what do you have to do for 6 weeks, starve to death? Not hardly!

The first two weeks is a period where you release the toxins in your liver — the organ most responsible for helping you get rid of the visceral fat stores in your body. This is the fat that accumulates around your organs that can be dangerous if left unchecked. Using a proven 3 and 1 plan drinking a trio of specially-formulated protein shakes along with one meal (the delicious recipes are included in this book) along with certain restrictions on alcohol, caffeine, medications, and other interesting requirements (like donating blood?), you only have to stay in this phase for two weeks. Anybody can do this for a measly fourteen days!

The second two weeks when your liver is cleaned up and ready to help you burn off a ton of stored body fat, you get to enjoy what the Eades affectionately call the “Meat Weeks.” Your meals will consist primarily of meat, fish, poultry, game, and eggs consumed throughout the day in quantities enough to keep your hunger at bay. What most people will find is the fat and protein content of these foods will keep them PLENTY satisfied.

Lest you think you’ll need to opt for the “lean” cuts of meat like chicken or turkey — NOPE! In fact, fat is ENCOURAGED, including liberal amounts of butter, olive oil, avocado oil, and macadamia nut oil, just to name a few. This will allow your body to rev up your metabolism by switching from being a carb-burning machine to a high-octane fat-burning one instead by reducing the typical insulin rush seen by most carb-focused dieters. Vroom vroom!

Finally, the last two-week period of The 6-Week Cure For The Middle-Aged Middle should look very familiar to people who have read the Protein Power books or followed any number of low-carb plans like Atkins. After getting your body going with a month-long restoration and revitalization, the Eades turn your attention to establishing good long-term healthy eating patterns into your lifestyle so you can prevent the dreaded weight gain from happening to you again. That includes keeping total carbohydrates in check, limiting your consumption of starchy carbs as much as possible, and transitioning to a low-carb maintenance phase.

If trouble ever arises again, you just get right back on the plan again getting back to the basics of what it takes to lose the weight again. Don’t be discouraged because we’ve all been there before. NEVER GIVE UP!

We owe Drs. Mike and Mary Dan Eades a huge THANK YOU for the tireless efforts they invest in helping people who are livin’ la vida low-carb day in and day out with the work they are doing. I consider it an honor and a privilege to know them as friends, be continually educated by their nutritional wisdom, and to follow their example of humility and selflessness towards others in this journey to better health. You owe it to yourself to pick up several copies of The 6-Week Cure For The Middle-Aged Middle and give it to as many friends and family members that you can think of who feel frustrated by the failure of the low-fat dogma that has dominated American culture for decades.

The tide is turning because the truth about low-carb living is finally penetrating the minds of health-conscious people. Will you become the next to join the low-carb revolution that is taking America by storm?

Got A ‘Middle-Aged Middle’? Let Drs. Mike And Mary Dan Eades Help You In Just 6 Weeks

Drs. Mike and Mary Dan Eades developed a 6-week plan to flatten your belly

A wedding. A high school reunion. Fitting into a bathing suit in time for summer. We all have our reasons for wanting to lose weight, but sometimes we want it to happen quickly. This doesn’t mean that you necessarily need to lose weight quickly as a general rule, but there are certain circumstances when it is required. That’s the subject of a brand new book from two of the most famous low-carb celebrities today who join me as podcast guests to talk about it.

In Episode 286 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” we hear from the low-carb giants Drs. Mike and Mary Dan Eades as they discuss their September 8, 2009 book release The 6-Week Cure For The Middle-Aged Middle: The Simple Plan to Flatten Your Belly Fast! The Eades are expressly concerned about fat accumulation not just in the subcutaneous area, but also in the visceral area that surrounds the organs. They realize from many years of eating low-carb that people can tend to get “sloppy” with their low-carb nutritional habits and wanted to develop a way for low-carbers to get back in the groove again when subtle weight gain happens. Listen in to hear them explain why it is important to get rid of unwanted visceral fat quickly and safely through a proven 6-week plan they came up with based on all their research over the years that they developed in response to being told they were too fat to be on television. OUCH! There are no stronger proponents of healthy low-carb living in the medical community than Dr. Mike and Dr. Mary Dan and they are such a pleasure to listen to. ENJOY!

New Low-Carb Book From Jimmy Moore To Focus On Health And ‘Life Lessons’

Filed under: New Product, Publications — jimmy @ 7:24 pm

My second book is scheduled to be released in August 2009

I’m always looking for new and innovative ways to get the message out about healthy low-carb living which is why my blog has branched out into various areas, including a twice-weekly, interview-styled podcast show, a fun and engaging YouTube video series with my wife Christine, a very active low-carb discussion forum, and so many other areas like Facebook, Twitter, and web sites that syndicate the content I provide. Visit LivinLaVidaLowCarb.com for a full listing of all the official “Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb”-affiliated projects.

One of the ways I have been working on sharing what I’ve learned about the low-carb lifestyle is by writing books. In October 2005, I released my debut book Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb: My Journey From Flabby Fat To Sensationally Skinny In One Year which shared what my 180-pound weight loss on the Atkins diet was like in 2004. Some criticized me at the time for writing a book so soon after losing weight because I really hadn’t learned anything yet.

Well, now it is five years later and I’ve learned so much about not just low-carb, but life in general that I wanted to share some of the lessons gleaned from taking this amazing journey to better health. While my first book focused almost exclusively on my personal weight loss experience, this new book entitled 21 Life Lessons From Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb: How The Healthy Low-Carb Lifestyle Changed Everything I Thought I Knew will share the evidence behind the health benefits of this way of eating and how that has changed my life in more ways than I could have ever dreamed.

This new book allows me to discuss ways my life has been positively impacted by the circumstances that have happened since I became such a public figure on behalf of low-carb, dieting, and healthy living on the Internet. There will even be some revealing moments in the book regarding my encounters with personal critics, my side of the Kimkins scam story that has never been shared publicly, and the death of my brother Kevin in 2008.

Click here to learn more about my upcoming new low-carb book by listening to a special rebroadcast of a one-hour TeleClass presentation that took place on June 18, 2009.

My Top 30 best low-carb blogs and web sites on the Internet

Last weekend when I got away for a few days to attend my 20-year high school reunion in Florida, I posted this column featuring 24 brand new low-carb diet and health blogs that have caught my eye as of late as has become my tradition to do prior to leaving town. New low-carb information web sites are continually being formed each and every day and I’m all too eager to share them with my readers so they can be exposed to new voices of support and encouragement about livin’ la vida low-carb. Feel free to share YOURS or one that you think should be highlighted here in a future blog post by e-mailing me the URL anytime at livinlowcarbman@charter.net.

When I returned home earlier this week from my Florida trip, I received the following e-mail from a reader who was curious about the low-carb diet and health blogs and web sites that I like to visit regularly. Here’s what he wrote:

You recently posted several blogs that we can check out. For someone that doesn’t have time to keep up with all of the low-carb blogs, can you recommend the web sites or blogs that are great for inspiration and information for my low-carb lifestyle? Which one’s do you visit on a regular basis?

Oh, this is so gonna get me in trouble because I KNOW already I’m gonna leave some good people who do a wonderful job of low-carb blogging out. Although there are a TON of excellent low-carb information sites listed at my low-carb links blog that I highly encourage you to check out, click here for the ones I have bookmarked to check early and often in no particular order–they’re all AMAZING and updated on a consistent basis.
