Radisson rolls out new low-carb menu

Radisson Hotels & Resorts has joined forces with Mission Foods and the New England Culinary Institute (NECI) to create a low-carb menu, which will debut this month at all of its Radisson-managed properties throughout the U.S. and the Caribbean.

Guests will soon be able to choose from a list of low-carb options including Poached Eggs with Chile Hollandaise, Smoked Duck Quesadilla or Crab Crispitos, all made with Mission Low Carb Tortillas.

Holiday Inn tests electronic menus

Today’s USA Today notes that Holiday Inn is testing an electronic menu that allows patrons to track carbs and calories (not to mention the bill) without using a calculator. You can find the high-tech menus at a Holiday Inn shortly outside of Atlanta (in Duluth). The hotel chain expects to expand the test to 10 locations.

bq. Because it also taps into the Internet, travelers can surf the Web–checking out plane schedules, weather and other critical travel information–as they dine.

Cystal Cruises offers low-carb menu

Crystal Cruises is the latest cruise ship company to offer its patrons a low-carb menu. Crystal Cruises now has a low-carb menu in every restaurant fleet wide.

Here is a sampling of the new food:

* Tuna Sashimi Salad with Matsuhisa Dressing – 7.4g total carbs
* Trio of Cremes Brulees – 15.3g total carbs
* Ginger and Soy Sauce – 11.5g total carbs

Carnival Cruise Lines launched a similar program last month.

Carnival Cruise Lines introduces low-carb line

Carnival Cruise Lines today announced that it will soon have low-carb fare fleet wide. The new entrees are being rolled out this week and should be available on all ships within a month.

bq. Dinner menus in the ships’ main dining rooms will feature an appetizer, salad and entree with a low carbohydrate count. The number of carbohydrate grams per dish is listed beneath each low carb selection.

Here are some samples of the new foods:

Appetizers

* Vine Ripe Beefsteak Tomatoes and Fresh Buffalo Mozzarella – Marinated with Basil Leaves and Virgin Olive Oil – 3 grams of carbs
* Hickory Smoked Alaskan Salmon – Garnished with Purple Onion Rings, Fresh Dill and Baby Capers – 2 grams of carbs

Entrees

* Filet Mignon with Gorgonzola Butter – Aged Center-Cut Beef Tenderloin, Grilled to Perfection with Green Beans – 8 grams of carbs
Pepper-Seared Supreme of Young Long Island Duckling – Marsala Infused Purple Onion Confit, Steamed Bok Choy and Sauteed Spinach – 6 grams of carbs
* Tender Roasted Prime Rib of American Beef au Jus – Broccoli Roses and Grilled Tomato – 4 grams of carbs
* Jerked Pork Loin — Slowly Roasted Center Cut Pork Loin, Marinated in Island
Spices and Herbs Sauteed Savoy Cabbage with Bacon — 6 grams of carbs.

Lufthansa to test low-carb meals

Lufthansa, a major international airline, announced that it will start to test low-carb meals on flights from Los Angeles to Germany. The test run will last 2 months, but could expand to other markets if the response is positive.

The meals will only be on the business class menu and will feature an appetizer, entree and dessert. According to the company, it will be the first to offer a complete low-carb meal.

Help’s on the way for traveling dieters

USA Today has an excellent roundup of great places to dine for low-carb dieters on the road:

bq. Airlines like Northwest, America West and United’s Ted have either been selling or giving away low-carb candy. United also sells low-carb salads through a deal with the Au Bon Pain bakery chain.

Wyndham will introduce several low-carb entrees to all 100 hotels by April 30 in restaurants and room service.

Sofitel launches a low-carb menu next month at its 10 U.S. hotels. Included: a low-carb chocolate banana brownie with strawberry yogurt pudding.

The penne pasta made with low-carb soy noodles is outselling the higher-carb four-cheese tortellini at the trendy Mosaic Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., says executive chef Rich Wood.

T.G.I. Friday’s, the casual dining restaurant, says sales of the nine Atkins-approved entrees are higher at its 21 airport restaurants than the rest of the chain.

Northwest eliminates the high-carb pasta entree choice in international business class on June 1. To reduce carbs, it’s slicing the bread thinner.

Hyatt to offer low-carb menu

We must have missed the memo, but it’s the day for hotels to go low-carb. Earlier today, Sheraton announced it would offer low-carb items, and just a few hours later Hyatt is promising the same thing.

bq. Debuting at Hyatt restaurants, room service and banquet menus this week, Hyatt’s low-carb alternative defines palate-pleasing perfection while maintaining a net carbohydrate total of less than 20 grams for each dish.

Here are a few of the new items:

* Bacon wrapped turkey medallions
* Spicy Asian chicken salad
* Hot smoked salmon quesadilla

Sheraton Hotels to launch low-carb fare

Sheraton Hotels announced that starting next month, 200 of its hotels will have low-carb restaurant menus, room service offerings, cocktails, club lounge service and to-go snacks. An expansion to take the program overseas will begin later this year.

Here are some of the included items (most have under 5 net carbs):

* Portobello Chicken Burger
* Seared Norwegian Salmon
* Mediterranean Garlic Chicken
* Low-carb beer

There is also a special banquet menu so you can offer low-carb items at parties, weddings and the like.
