The AP writes that low-carb diets have had a hard time crossing the Atlantic–besides Britain, Europe is still enjoying carbohydrates. The article gives several reasons for the diet gap, including portion size:

bq. An entire European family could make a picnic of canapes from the staggering high pile of cold cuts in just one New York deli sandwich. Italians return from abroad stunned by cherished U.S. dining habits like all-you-can eat restaurants and doggy bags for all you can’t eat.

Low-carb all the rage in Europe

An estimated three million people have adopted the low-carb lifestyle in the UK — and according to a new report, 95 percent of Europe’s food makers believe they can no longer ignore the popular diets. A quarter of the companies polled in the Reuters Business Insight survey said they had already manufactured a low-carb product, and two thirds said they saw the expansion of the low-carb sector as an opportunity.
